TL;DR · Quick Answer

For most caregivers: Drive Medical Bellavita Dive Bath Lift (~$449) is the standard recommendation: quiet, low seat (under 3 inches when down so user immerses fully), reclining backrest, included waterproof remote. For portable/travel use: Mangar Archimedes Bath Lift (~$644) is the OT-favorite for parents who travel or rent. Both are FSA/HSA eligible. Always measure your tub depth and width before buying.

Bath lift vs. walk-in tub: the cost math.

SolutionCostInstallWhat you get
Walk-in tub (premium)$7,000-$13,5003-5 daysTub immersion + hydrotherapy jets + permanent install
Walk-in tub (basic)$4,500-$7,0002-3 daysTub immersion + permanent install
Bath lift (premium)$650-$1,0005 minTub immersion + safe entry/exit
Bath lift (entry)$300-$5005 minTub immersion + safe entry/exit
Portable bath lift (travel)$600-$7005 minPortable + travel + multi-bathroom use

A bath lift is the same outcome as a walk-in tub — safe tub immersion — for ~10% of the cost. The only walk-in tub advantage is built-in hydrotherapy jets. See our walk-in tub alternatives guide for the broader comparison.

Measure your tub before you buy.

  1. Tub depth (rim to floor): standard tubs are 14-22 inches. Bath lifts work in 14"+ depths. If your tub is shallower than 14", you'll get partial immersion only.
  2. Tub width at the seat level: measure at the bottom of the tub where the lift will sit. Most bath lifts need 24-28" minimum.
  3. Tub length: standard tubs are 60". All bath lifts fit. Compact tubs under 54" may not.
  4. Surface for suction cups: bath lifts use suction cups to grip the tub floor. Smooth porcelain or acrylic = good. Textured non-slip tub bottoms = check fit.
  5. Tub shape: rectangular tubs work universally. Curved garden tubs and corner tubs may not fit standard bath lifts.

FAQ

What is a bath lift and how does it work?

A battery-powered seat that lowers your parent into the tub and raises them back out at the touch of a button. Suctions to the tub floor for stability. User sits at tub rim, presses the remote, the seat lowers to the tub floor for bathing, then raises back up for safe exit.

How much weight can a bath lift hold?

Standard: 300-330 lbs. Bariatric: up to 450 lbs. Portable Mangar Archimedes: up to 330 lbs.

Will Medicare pay for a bath lift?

Usually no — bath lifts are not classified as DME. Some Medicare Advantage plans include them in home-safety benefits. VA HISA grants may cover. Most caregivers pay out of pocket.

Will a bath lift fit my parent's tub?

Most fit standard 14-22" deep, 24-28" wide tubs. Measure depth, width at the bottom, and length. Walk-in tubs don't need a lift.

How long does the battery last?

5-10 lifts per charge. 1-2 years before replacement. Replacement: $80-$150.

Are bath lifts safer than walk-in tubs?

For most aging parents, yes — and at a fraction of the cost. Bath lifts also eliminate the long fill/drain wait that walk-in tubs require.
